Ask an Expert (FAQ)

Why should I quit smoking?
Most people already know the answer to this question, but ignore the awful truths that smoking is a major cause of cancer.
That it causes heart disease and premature death.
That it wastes hard earned money.
That it causes lung disease.
That it actually causes stress.
That it smells, causing you to smell.
That it is a major cause of strokes and paralysis.

What is the best medication to help stop smoking?
There are various forms of Nicotine Relacement Therapy sometimes referred to as NRT.

These are patches, gum, microtab, inhalators, nasal sprays. They all help to stop smoking. Our class advisors can help you decide what is best for you. We can arrange supply from your pharmacist, if you do not pay for prescriptions then NRT is free, otherwise you would pay the prescription charge.

Other medications such as Champix can be discussed with the class advisor.

When I stop, will I put on weight?
Not everyone puts on weight when they stop smoking. The class advisor will help you to minimise any weight gain and then how to lose weight.

I have tried to quit before and it did not work, why should this time be different?
Most people have several quit attempts before they finally quit for good. Each time your determination increases. The stop smoking classes will double your chances of quitting. You can do it, we can help.

How many times will I have to come to the classes?
